Grants available from US Labor Department to provide job training, employment services for 1,900 homeless female veterans, veterans with families

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the availability of up to $5 million to fund 16 or more Homeless Female Veterans and Veterans with Families grants. Approximately 1,900 veterans will receive job training and related services to help them succeed in civilian careers.
“Much too often, those who have given so much to the nation face a difficult transition to civilian life and struggle to find a job that matches their talents,” said acting Secretary of Labor Seth D. Harris. “The grants announced today will help provide support and job assistance for veterans and their families, and open doors for career opportunities.”
Funds for the grants are being awarded on a competitive basis to state and local workforce boards, local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, tribal governments, and faith-based and community organizations. Grantees must be familiar with the areas and populations to be served, and have demonstrated that they can administer effective programs and coordinate their efforts with various local, state and federal social service providers. Homeless female veterans and veterans with families may receive occupational, classroom and on-the-job training, as well as job search and placement assistance, including follow-up services.

U.S. Department of Labor Funding to Improve State Unemployment Insurance Programs

The U.S. Department of Labor is making available approximately $60 million in grant funding to state workforce agencies as part of its ongoing efforts to expedite the re-employment of unemployed workers and to improve the prevention, detection and recovery of improper payments. States have an opportunity to apply for this grant funding through the Re-employment Eligibility Assessment grant program. The REA program ensures UI claimants comply with eligibility requirements and provides them with personalized service and access to full array of employment programs available at American Job Centers. States interested in applying for grant funding must submit proposals by June 7, 2013.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Issues Revised Publications on the Employment Rights of People with Specific Disabilities

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has issued four revised documents on protection against disability discrimination. The documents address how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to applicants and employees with cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, and intellectual disabilities. These documents are available on the EEOC website at “Disability Discrimination, The Question and Answer Series.” The revised documents reflect the changes to the definition of disability made by the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) that make it easier to conclude that individuals with a wide range of impairments, including cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, and intellectual disabilities, are protected by the ADA.

Employer Assistance and Resource Network Launches New Employer Blog

The Employer Assistance and Resource Network (EARN) has launched a new business and disability blog, the EARN|Exchange. The blog will be updated several times each month with commentary on news and current events in business and disability employment. Postings will be provided by EARN staff as well as guest bloggers including experts in HR, recruiting, training, and more.

LEAD Center to Present Webinar on Promoting Employment — Introduction to Customized Employment and Customized Self-Employment, May 29, 3:00 – 4:30 pm EST

This LEAD Center webinar will provide information on Customized Employment, including Customized Self-Employment, as a best practice. Equal Opportunity Publications to Host STEM Diversity Career Expo — May 31, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm EST in Washington, DC

Equal Opportunity Publications (EOP) will host the STEM Diversity Career Expo for minorities, women, people with disabilities, and Wounded Warriors in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) career disciplines. The Expo will be held on May 31st, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. Job candidates can post their resumes online when they pre-register. All posted resumes will be provided to the employers who attend the Expo, so job candidates are encouraged to pre-register even if they will not be able to be at the event.
